Fans of Alan Wake will certainly get a kick out of today’s Daily Dose. The Lake in the Woods is a game by itch.io dev Jesnuk. It’s a familiar premise. You play a person who finds themselves in the woods with nothing but a camera and flashlight and knowledge that something is out there waiting to kill them. The goal is to simply get back to your tent, presumably to hide under the blanket where the monsters can’t get you.
There’s a lot about The Lake in the Woods that works really well. For one, you’ve got a very limited amount of flashlight battery left. Much like an actual flashlight, this one does not magically recharge, so you must use it wisely. The camera also makes for an interesting mechanic, which refuses the quality of vision but allows you to see when the whatever is out there is getting close. Balancing out all these while walking through a completely disorienting forest at night makes for a super stressful experience. In a good way, of course.
