Wes Craven’s Most Depraved Movie Is Now Streaming On Tubi: “One of the best revenge movies of all time”

Wes Craven

Many people forget that Wes Craven’s first horror movie was also his most controversial. Like any favorite elder, our beloved Uncle Wes had a history many of us never talk about. Long before he won most of us over with A Nightmare On Elm StreetScream, and the other movies that showcased his later-in-life aesthetic, he was a young filmmaker trying to make a name for himself. His first feature, The Last House on the Left (1972), achieved that and then some. The depraved title is currently streaming on Tubi, and I’m here to remind you why it still causes such a stir all of these decades later.

In the film,

“Teenagers Mari (Sandra Cassel) and Phyllis (Lucy Grantham) head to the city for a concert, then afterward go looking for drugs. Instead, they find a gang of escaped convicts who subject them to a night of torture and rape. The gang then kills the girls in the woods, not realizing they’re near Mari’s house. When they pose as salesmen and are taken in by Mari’s mother (Cynthia Carr) and father (Gaylord St. James), it doesn’t take the parents long to figure out their identities and plot revenge.”

The Last House on the Left was written and directed by Wes Craven. The movie stars Sandra Peabody, Lucy Grantham, David A. Hess, Fred Lincoln, Jeramie Rain, Marc Sheffler, Eleanor Shaw, and Richard Towers.

It was also produced by Sean S. Cunningham, the co-creator of the Friday the 13th franchise. This makes me think Freddy and Jason were destined to meet long before Freddy vs. Jason hit our screens.

Many Wes Craven fans have a hard time making it through this title. The people who do swear that it is still one of the most brutal movies of its era.

I am a Wes Craven stan account, but I avoid the movie like I do emails about paying back my student loans. However, I always appreciate that Uncle Wes upset so many people the first time he directed a feature. It helps him earn his place among the greatest genre filmmakers of our time and cements him as the coolest horror uncle we’ve ever had.

Are you one of the brave souls who have made it to the end of The Last House on the Left? If so, let me know where it ranks among your favorite Wes Craven films at @misssharai.
