As fireworks continue to explode in neighborhoods across America and we slowly graze on barbecue leftovers, many of us are nursing that Fourth of July hangover with a nice binge-watch on the couch. And it just so happens that the number one movie on Netflix is also the perfect watch for those looking for a smattering of violence with their patriotism. That film is White House Down, the 2013 action-thriller directed by Roland Emmerich.

In White House Down,

Capitol police officer John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) as a member of the Secret Service. Not wanting to disappoint his young daughter with the bad news, Cale takes her on a tour of the White House. While he and his daughter are there, a heavily armed paramilitary group attacks and seizes control. As the nation’s government dissolves in chaos, only Cale can save his daughter, the president, and the country.

If there’s anyone to direct a massive action-meet-disaster movie, it’s Emmerich. The German director is known for creating massive action blockbusters such as Independence Day, 2012, and The Day After Tomorrow. Emmerich knows how to deliver one helluva action sequence that’ll have you making your own emergency preparedness plan.

With Tatum taking on the role of heroic action star and Foxx as our vulnerable president, no wonder it’s become a Fourth of July staple for so many.
