Takashi Miike’s New Hulu Horror Series Is Being Called “A Masterpiece”

Takashi Miike

Takashi Miike is known for two things: his prolific filmography and eye for the disgusting and disturbing. With films such as Audition, Ichi The Killer, and Visitor Q, Miike’s oeuvre is full of shining examples of extreme horror cinema. Now, the Japanese director is taking those skills into the TV world with Connect, a Korean production streaming now on Hulu. While it may not be as gory as Miike’s previous work, it’s still full of unsettling imagery and creepy killers.

The new Hulu series is based on a webtoon of the same name by Shin Dae Sung. The webtoon was published in 2019 and 2020 with a similar premise to the show. However, there is no English translation currently available.

Read the synopsis below:

A man, Ha Dong-soo, is kidnapped and one of his eyes is removed by a gang of organ hunters. But, his eyes were transplanted into the body of a serial killer. The unwilling donor now has terrible visions as he witnesses terrifying attacks on the residents of Seoul.

The plot synopsis fails to mention that Ha Dong-soo, played by Korean star Jung Hae-in, is able to heal himself via a flurry of strange tentacles. Also, the serial killer featured in Connect isn’t any old serial killer. They make each of their victims into a sculpture and place them in public as if they are works of art. While not as gory as Miike’s previous works, the series just oozes the director’s macabre sensibilities.

Connect, well, connects several strange stories together in a fascinating and violent web. The series quietly dropped on Hulu earlier this month with little advertising done by the streamer. Thankfully, K-drama fans, as well as Jung Hae-in stans, are taking to Twitter to sing the praises of Connect. Read some of the reactions below.
