TikTok Claims To Have Found Three of the Most Disturbing Horror Movies on Netflix [Video]

Incantation

The genre output during the 2000s can sometimes fall into the abyss of time, unable to truly become memorable and lasting entries in horror. The iconic films of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s can sometimes suck the air out of the room leaving fans of the new classics out in the cold. That’s where TikTok comes in.

Thanks to some enterprising horror fans taking advantage of the newfound influence that the TikTok platform provides, it’s easier than ever to keep track of all the disturbing horror films you might have missed when you’re busy watching Halloween III: Season of the Witch for the umpteenth time. But who needs an exhaustive list? The magic number for TikToker itsheidiwong seems to be three—a suspicious number that continues to pop up in horror folklore in films like Candyman.

It’s no wonder, then, that the first of these three disturbing, underseen gems on Netflix starts with the main character unleashing an evil curse…

Incantation

One thing Netflix gets right is the ability to pick out some truly unsettling international films and amplify their impact around the globe. Filmmaker Kevin Ko’s found footage dive into supernatural horror became the most successful Taiwanese horror film of all time, and it just came out in 2022. The mockumentary follows Li Ruo-nan (Hsuan-yen Tsai), a mother who unwittingly unlocks a curse from an ancient religious shrine putting her daughter in mortal danger. It looks like it was added to this TikTok list because so many people said it was hard for them to watch The Incantation all the way through. This movie has even inspired a new TikTok challenge!

No One Gets Out Alive

Directed by Santiago Menghini, the British horror film No One Gets Out Alive hit Netflix in September of last year and immediately started freaking people out. The film has a classic horror MacGuffin in the form of a mysterious box that the lead character, Ambar (Cristina Rodlo), discovers after her father, an archaeologist, brings it back from a dig in Mexico. Sacrifice is involved (of course) and Ambar attempts to survive attempts to trap her in the boardinghouse she’s been forced to stay in. (Honestly, if it wasn’t for these kinds of TikTok lists, I would never have even heard of this one.)

Hush

One of the best home invasion movies to come out in the last few years, Hush has managed to stay in the conversation long after the Netflix algorithm pushed it into movie oblivion. That’s probably because people keep discovering Mike Flanagan’s story about a masked intruder terrorizing a deaf and mute writer based on the director’s growing reputation as a new master of horror. Hush is definitely worth a rewatch or a first-time viewing if you’re a fan of Flanagan’s Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House or Midnight Mass. Currently, Flanagan is the director behind the Christopher Pike YA adaptation of The Midnight Club on the streamer.

Flanagan is also a real champion of the genre, recently giving a shout-out to the makers of Terrifier 2, deeming that they’ve created a new subgenre called the “MegaSlasher.”
