In his feature film debut Smile, Parker Finn takes a simple symbol of happiness or contentment and makes it horrific. I mean, there isn’t much scarier than a wide smile with dead eyes. It’s a trope seen before in films such as The Conjuring because it’s so incredibly effective. Now, Finn uses that trope paired with what seems to be a smiling contagion that’s a harbinger of death.
After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.
