Least shocking news story of the weekend: The final Twilight opened to mega bucks at the box office. Even the combined might of James Bond and our 16th President proved no match for a teenage werewolf’s lovelorn quest to make love to a baby.
You should try doing what I’ve done the last two days since seeing the final Twilight and start every conversation with “Yesterday I saw that movie about the werewolf that wants to fuck a baby” just to see the reaction you’ll get. Probably the same look you’ll get from your male friends when you follow it up telling them you actually saw The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2: The Volturi Strikes Back.
Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (review here) scored the sixth highest opening day in history when it took in $71.2 million on Friday (including the $30 million from the midnight sneak previews) on its way to a $141.3 million opening weekend. That’s slightly above the previous film’s opening and slightly below the series high, New Moon’s $143 million. But when combined with the nearly $200 million international box office, Twilight continues to be a global phenomenon that can stir up $340 million worldwide in only a matter of days, according to Deadline.
With numbers like that, it should come as no surprise rumors have already begun swirling that Summit Entertainment wants to reboot the franchise. Personally, I can’t wait to see The Amazing Twilight.
Or they could just go the George Lucas route and wait a few years to re-release all the Twilight movies again in 3D. It would be the first time most of the cast gave a three-dimensional performance.
Lest you thought dawn had finally broken for those awaiting the end of the Twilight saga, much like the Friday the 13th films, a new beginning awaits us. Until that day comes, here’s one, make that three, last chances to kick the sparkly corpse.
