Horror History: CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON Is Now 67 Years Old

On this day in horror history, On this day in horror history, Jack Arnold’s Creature from the Black Lagoon with Richard Carlson and Julie Adams opened in 1954.

The film begins when remnants of a mysterious animal come to light in a remote jungle. A group of scientists set out to determine if the find is an anomaly or evidence of an undiscovered beast. Now the scientists must brave the most perilous piece of land in South America. But the terrain is nothing compared to the danger posed by an otherworldly being that endangers their work and their lives.

Creature from the Black Lagoon sports a solid 78% over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: A solid, atmospheric creature feature, Creature from the Black Lagoon entertains without attempting to be deeper than it needs.

In addition to Carlson and Adams, Ben Chapman co-starred as The Creature on land and Ricou Browning as The Creature underwater. The film spawned two sequels Revenge of the Creature and The Creature Walks Among Us.

William Alland produced the black-and-white Universal monster movie. Richard Denning also co-starred with Antonio Moreno, Nestor Paiva, and Whit Bissell. It was filmed in 3D but because 3D peaked in 1953, many actually saw the film in 2D.

For marketing, The Creature AKA the Gill-man appeared with Abbott and Costello on an episode of The Colgate Comedy Hour known as Abbott and Costello Meet the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Ben Chapman returned as the Creature.
