HELLRAISER Author Clive Barker Has Reclaimed the Rights After Lawsuit

Clive Barker has snagged back the rights to Hellraiser. The Hellbound Heart author wrote and directed the original film with Doug Bradley. And now he’s successfully leveraged copyright law to recapture the American rights to the franchise.

But the end result is: Barker recaptures U.S. rights on December 19, 2021. No word on if he also managed to snag the foreign rights. But we’ll keep you updated.

Barker wrote and directed the film which Christopher Figg produced based on Barker’s book. Christopher Young (Drag Me to Hell) provided the killer score.
The first flick found sexual deviant Frank (Sean Chapman) inadvertently opening a portal to hell when he tinkers with a box he bought while abroad. The act unleashes gruesome beings called Cenobites, who tear Frank’s body apart. When Frank’s brother (Andrew Robinson) and his wife, Julia (Clare Higgins), move into Frank’s old house, they accidentally bring what is left of Frank back to life. Frank then convinces Julia, his one-time lover, to lure men back to the house so he can use their blood to reconstruct himself.
It starred Clare Higgins as Julia Cotton with Ashley Laurence as Kirsty Cotton and Andrew Robinson as Larry Cotton. Sean Chapman co-starred as Frank Cotton with Robert Hines as Steve and Doug Bradley as Lead Cenobite / Pinhead. Nicholas Vince joined them as Chattering Cenobite with Simon Bamford as Butterball and Grace Kirby as Female Cenobite. Oliver Smith played “Skinless” Frank.
The film sports a 72% over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Elevated by writer-director Clive Barker’s fiendishly unique vision, Hellraiser offers a disquieting – and sadistically smart – alternative to mindless gore.
