Drive-In Style Haunted Houses Are a Huge Hit in Japan

While western horror fans flock to haunted houses every year in and around October, Summer is the scary-season in Japan, where being terrified is seen as a welcome relief from the sweltering heat. Of course, the Coronavirus pandemic has put the kibosh on plans for traditional public haunts–but the show must go on!
Haunted house design company Kowagarasetai has created what they believe is a first-of-its-kind experience: A drive-in style haunt! Sora News 24 reports:
Well, technically it’s a haunted garage, located in Tokyo’s swanky Higashi Azabu district. According to the event’s provided backstory:
“This is a garage where a horrible incident occurred long ago. Now people say that if you park your car inside and honk your horn three times, something will happen.”
Participants will experience “the dead” surrounding their vehicle. The radio will play additional scary details. Your car will be left covered in blood–but completely sanitized! The event is already sold out through July 5th, but residents of Japan can apply for a lottery, HERE.
My Dread Central colleague Jon Condit commented: “Having seen people at haunts, I can’t help but think someone is getting run over!” Let’s hope not!
If Kowagarasetai’s haunted house is a hit, we may see similar drive-in style attractions in America come the Halloween season. Time will tell.
