On this day in horror history, Deep Rising writer-director Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy with Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Kevin J. O’Connor, and Arnold Vosloo was unleashed in 1999.
The film’s success led to two sequels – The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – an animated series and the spin-off The Scorpion King with The Rock.

The Mummy is a rousing, suspenseful and horrifying epic about an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925. Stumbling upon an ancient tomb, they unwittingly set loose a 3,000-year-old legacy of terror, which is embodied in the vengeful reincarnation of an Egyptian priest who had been sentenced to an eternity as one of the living dead.
Rated PG-13 for pervasive adventure violence and partial nudity, it sports a 60% over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: It’s difficult to make a persuasive argument for The Mummy as any kind of meaningful cinematic achievement, but it’s undeniably fun to watch.
