This Day in Horror History: Happy Birthday Tim Curry

Few actors are as loved and lauded by multiple generations of genre fans as Tim Curry. Best known as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Curry also played Darkness in Legend, Wadsworth in Clue, and Pennywise the Dancing Clown in 1990’s IT. Throughout his career, Curry has maintained a level of privacy and anonymity rare in Hollywood–so much so that many were unaware he suffered a debilitating stroke in 2012. Still, after a period of isolation Curry returned to entertainment as a voice-over actor; more recently, Curry has returned to the convention circuit where he’s a major draw.

Not only was he Tim Burton’s second choice for the role of the Joker in Batman (1989), Curry was the producers’ first choice for the role on the animated series. However, after recording four episodes, his take on the Joker was deemed as too scary for children, and thus the part was given to Mark Hamill. (Source)

Tim Curry was born on this day in 1946 and, today, all of us here at Dread Central wish him a very Happy Birthday!
