This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Ethan Hawke

Born on this day in 1970: Ethan Hawke.

Hawke’s first role was in Joe Dante’s sci-fi kids flick, Explorers, in 1985. It was nearly twenty years before he returned to genre films, with roles in genetic sci-fi thriller Gattaca and futuristic vampire film Daybreakers

Hawke once said that he was always turned off by horror because good acting wasn’t necessary in horror films. However, an old friend named Jason Blum convinced him to take the lead role in Sinister. The film’s critical and financial success clearly led Hawke to be open to genre work, and he starred in The Purge a few years later.
