New Video Goes Into The Disgusting Sounds Of MORTAL KOMBAT

A new video from the team over at VICE News takes a deep dive into one of the more fascinating yet often overlooked aspects of video games: the sound design. In particular, this video addresses one of the most recognizable franchises in video game history: Mortal Kombat.

In the video, the VICE team heads to the NetherRealm Studios in Chicago where they spoke with Senior Sound Designer Stephen Schappler about what it takes to create the gross, disgusting, cringe-inducing sound effects that we hear when breaking our opponents, ripping them limb from limb. Turns out, a lot of it is built upon the destruction of produce. Y’know, green peppers, grapefruits, walnuts, and the like.

For those interested in the behind-the-scenes workings of a video game, this is a really great peek into this world. It’s rather fascinating to think that the sounds we hear come from just a few dollars at the grocery store…and, y’know, tens of thousands of dollars of studio equipment, plug-ins, software, training, research, etc…
