PET SEMATARY Producer Says They Had Three Endings: “Dark, Darker, and Darkest”; Which One Made the Film?

Pet Sematary has never been for the faint of heart. Stephen King was so disturbed by his own creation, he put the novel in a drawer for years, uncertain if he could bring himself to release it. The 1989 film adaptation directed by Mary Lambert didn’t shy away from the novel’s most horrifying elements, resulting in a movie that remains a classic of the 1980s.
Now, a new Pet Sematary has arrived in US theaters nationwide, and a whole new generation is feeling the trauma! The ending is exceptionally brutal, but it turns out producers toyed with a few possible conclusions for the film. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura told our friends at Collider: “We had three different ideas [for the ending]. Dark, darker, and darkest.” So which one made the film?
“We chose darkest.”
Two endings were actually filmed, so how did they decide which one to use in the film? They essentially let test-audiences decide.
“You can’t possibly know in the script form what the audience is gonna need. It’s not what they want, it’s what they need. It’s a very different thing. A lot of times with endings, you kind of just let the audience tell you what they’re feeling. We got to screen both of them to people and it just seemed like audiences really responded to that one.”
In one of the other versions of the scrip, Louis Creed actually killed Ellie. Whether this alternate ending will make the Blu-ray spacial features remains to be seen. It would certainly be interesting to see how Pet Sematary could have ended.
