Official Plot Synopsis for DUNE Promises “Mythic and Emotional” Journey

Many fans of Frank Herbert’s Dune have deemed the novel “unadaptable” for film, claiming the saga is too heady, metaphysical, nuanced, and complex to be encapsulated in a single film (no matter how long it is). Indeed, Alejandro Jodorowsky spent years conceptualizing a Dune movie, even enlisting H.R. Giger for concept art, that never came to fruition. David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation was nearly universally panned and the filmmaker has since disavowed the film entirely.
Still, director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, The Arrival) is determined to prove the naysayers wrong with a new Dune movie eyeing a November 2020 release. Today, we can announce that production on the film has officially started; the news was accompanied by an official synopsis for Villeneuve’s vision.
Synopsis:
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s
journey, Dune tells the story of
Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny
beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the
universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent
forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most
precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s
greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
Dune will star Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, and Rebecca Ferguson. It’ll be a while before we get a trailer, but we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground in order to bring you updates as details emerge. Stay tuned!
