From the very beginning, 20th Century Fox has been selling the upcoming film The New Mutants as the superhero movie horror fans have wanted for years. And speaking of years, that’s how long we’ve been waiting to see the film. Originally slated for a 2017 release, The New Mutants was punted into 2018 making many of that year’s “Most Hotly-Anticipated” movie lists.
Then, Fox decided to go back for significant reshoots, leading to a massive delay of over a year. Promising the revisions will only make horror fans happier, The New Mutants’ current release date is August 2nd, 2019. Unfortunately, one industry insider is bracing fans for another delay. Worse, it seems the film may never get the theatrical release it was promised.
Podcaster Scott Bechtel (co-host of Merc with a Podcast) believes that director Josh Boone’s acrimonious relationship with Fox can only mean one thing: More delays. Here’s what he told his Twitter followers over the weekend.
“Just heard a whisper through the grapevine: The New Mutants will be delayed again. Fox and Boone are really struggling coming to terms on a comprehensible and finished product. They’re looking to release it in early November. But Fox is still toying with a Hulu release in October for The New Mutants. They’re trying to decide which method would have a more returnable value for an otherwise dead on arrival film.”
What makes this all exceptionally frustrating is that we saw trailers for The New Mutants years ago, proving the film is clearly taking influence from horror classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street. Also, the first cut of The New Mutants was screened for test audiences who positively loved it. So, seriously Fox: WTF? Of course, it’s completely likely that Disney’s impending acquisition of Fox is gumming things up for the R-rated film.
Don’t kill the messenger, folks. Keep in mind that we’ve yet to receive an official announcement from Fox, and this “grapevine” Bechtel refers to is notoriously unreliable. Time will tell. As we await further news, check out the (hella old) trailer and synopsis for The New Mutants below.
