Soundtracks For the SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK Audiobooks Recreated With Synths

The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will forever and always hold a special place in my heart. When I was a young boy, the images terrified me, even if the levels of fear that the stories offered paled in comparison. But there was a charm to them, a magnificent combination of hokey stories alongside traumatizing imagery. When it comes to books, the breadth of one’s imagination is all that’s needed to take a story and flesh it out, although in this case the addition of Gammell’s scrawled, scratched drawings certainly helped fuel those nightmarish tales. Theoretically, that’s all one needs for these stories.

But in the late 80’s, an audiobook version of these iconic stories was released with George S. Irving acting as narrator. These audiobooks featured original music by Blane and DeRosa studios, which YouTuber Jamesthec’s Channel has lovingly recreated with “… a slightly modified Roland GM soundfont”. The music is your standard “obviously creepy”, sounding much like something that would play during an episode of Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark?, which only adds to the nostalgia of the original property. You can listen to the first video above and the second is below.

CBS Films’ Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will be released in August 2019. It is directed by André Øvredal and produced by Guillermo del Toro.
