Steve Niles and Rob Zombie's Bigfoot coming to the big screen (click for larger image)Johnny Butane just reported in from this weekend’s Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in Secaucus, NJ, with some good news for Steve Niles fans regarding putting more of Niles’ comics onto celluloid. First off, during his panel Niles informed the audience that he is just finishing a script for an adaptation of Bigfoot, the 2004 four-issue miniseries Niles co-wrote with Rob Zombie, which was illustrated by Heavy Metal‘s Richard Corben.

He’s also in discussions with a company called Hyde Park to bring Freaks of the Heartland to the big screen next. Freaks tells the tale of “Trevor Owen and his younger brother who lives in the barn, too monstrous to be let into the house. The boy’s only six years old, but he towers over his older brother and possesses monstrous strength. For years, Trevor has looked after his baby brother, keeping him from the light, but now that’s all about to change. His family’s profane secret is about to be revealed, uncovering the horrible truth of the small midwestern town the boys have grown up in.” Sounds like just the kind of dark and disturbing tale we could use right now to give the horror genre a good kick in the pants.

Lastly, Niles mentioned that several studios have made offers to put together a project with his much beloved character Cal McDonald, a private occult detective, at the helm (who Niles said without a doubt would be played by Thomas Jane). Unfortunately, they all want to remove any drug references from Cal’s lifestyle. Why not just cut off his balls too while you’re at it? Credit goes to Niles for sticking to his guns and refusing to sell out the character and his fans. As he explains it, “Tough talk and hard-drinking just ain’t hard enough so Cal is a total fuck-up, a drunk, a pill-popping fool and an ex-junkie. It’s not gratuitous, or a lame attempt to be shocking. This is how the character has tried to deal with his life, with the horrors he sees on a daily basis.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for more news about any and all of these ongoing projects from Niles, and in the meantime we have the premiere of 30 Days of Night (check out our news archive here) in theatres this October to look forward to. Be sure to visit Steve Niles’ official site here and become his friend on MySpace here.
