You know it’s a weird (but good) day when two different news items about the Winchester Mystery House land in our e-mail inbox. First up…

James Van Praagh, one of the world’s most celebrated and respected spiritual mediums working today, makes his first-ever appearance at the famed Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, on Tuesday, May 17, as he broadcasts his live weekly radio show on Hay House Radio (satellite and internet, 11:00 am to 12 noon PT) from the Morning Room of the mansion. After dark, Van Praagh will tour the legendary home with 30 special guests in a rare and intimate tour of the historic house, visiting rooms and areas not always associated with the popular daytime tours.

Following the tour, Van Praagh and his guests will gather in the mansion’s ornate Grand Ballroom for what is believed to be the first séance to be conducted in the spirited “haunted mansion” in over four decades. With only dim, flickering candlelight to capture the occasion, Van Praagh and guests will attempt to connect with the other side.

Through the years Van Praagh has been a pioneer in bringing the subject of “communication with the dead” into the public psyche. He is known as a “survival evidence medium,” meaning that he provides evidential proof of life after death via detailed messages. Each of the guests attending the tour and séance will receive a free, signed copy of Van Praagh’s best-selling book, Ghosts Among Us.

Sarah Winchester

From there Deadline is reporting that Daybreakers helmers Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig have been set to direct Winchester, a supernatural thriller based on the world famous Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, CA. The Spierigs, who also helmed Predestination, have written the script; and the film is set for financing by Diamond Pictures and Bullitt Entertainment, just in time for the Cannes Market.

Winchester tells the strange and dramatic tale of Sarah Winchester, who was heir to the Winchester firearms fortune. Her husband and child died suddenly, and Sarah came to believe she had been cursed by the lethal legacy of the “gun that won the west” and all of those who ended up on the wrong end of the gun barrel. She consulted a medium, who sent her to San Jose in 1884 to begin a massive construction process that took 38 years and resulted in a 24,000-square-foot, 160-room Gothic mansion.

Winchester was developed by Imagination Design Works, which owns rights to the house and gave this film its only endorsement, which allows the film to shoot on the premises of the actual home.
