We see a lot of “art imitating life” projects cross our path here at Dread Central, and the latest, Bridgend, seems even more horrific than most. The critically acclaimed, Danish-made film about teenage suicide is being released today as a Fandor Exclusive Digital SVOD release and is also opening theatrically in New York City at Cinema Village.

From the Press Release:
Based on a real life, mysterious teenage suicide cluster that took place in a former coal mining province in Wales (between December 2007 and January 2012, 79 suicides were officially committed in the area; most of the victims were teenagers who hanged themselves and left no suicide notes), filmmaker Jeppe Rønde followed teenagers in the area for six years and wrote the narrative script based on their life stories. Shot entirely on location in Wales, many of the local teenagers act in the film as well.

Deftly structured around young heroine Sara (an award-winning performance by Hannah Murray from UK’s “Skins” and Gilly on “Game of Thrones”), the film paints a sensitive exploration of natural adolescent confusion, romanticism, and sadness, set amidst rugged natural landscapes and award-winning cinematography. This is filmmaker Rønde’s fiction film debut.

Bridgend premiered at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival, winning three of the six main awards – Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. Murray’s co-stars include Josh O’Connor and Steven Waddington.

Synopsis:
Bridgend follows Sara and her dad, Dave, as they arrive to a small village in Bridgend County. The village is haunted by suicides amongst its young inhabitants, and Sara falls dangerously in love with one of the teenagers, Jamie, while Dave, as the town’s new policeman, tries to stop the mysterious chain of suicides. The film is an uncompromising story focused on the relationship between vulnerable teenagers and their parents, who are left in the dark.
