Last we heard, next month’s brand new franchise installment Amityville: The Awakening was coming at us with an R rating, and we were pretty excited about that. Unfortunately, today brings an update in the ratings department, indicating that a PG-13 cut of the film will instead be arriving in theaters. Read on for details.

The news comes courtesy of an MPAA bulletin shared by Film Ratings, which notes that Amityville: The Awakening is now rated PG-13 for “disturbing horror violence and terror, suggestive images, brief language and thematic material.” The previous R rating was for “strong horror violence and language.”

Sigh.

Dimension Films will release Amityville: The Awakening wide on April 1, 2016.

The film stars Bella Thorne, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Cameron Monaghan, Thomas Mann, Taylor Spreitler, Mckenna Grace, and Kurtwood Smith. Daniel Farrands and Casey La Scala co-wrote the script and produce with Jason Blum of hit factory Blumhouse. Franck Khalfoun (Maniac) directs.

Synopsis:
Belle and her family move into a new house, but when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house, Belle begins to suspect her mother isn’t telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.
