Seven Films in the Running for Visual Effects Oscar

Seven Films in the Running for Visual Effects OscarWhile it’s likely a foregone conclusion that Avatar will be taking home the Oscar, the Motion Picture Academy has announced the seven films that will compete in order to become one of three nominess for the Visual Effects Academy Award. And a couple of them are big favorites around the Dread Central offices.

As reported by Variety, the seven finalists for a nomination are “Avatar,” “District 9,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” “Star Trek,” “Terminator Salvation,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” and “2012.”

The visual effects bakeoff will be held Thursday evening, January 21, at the Academy’s Goldwyn Theater. Each pic will present 15 minutes of highlights. Members of the branch attend and vote for the three nominees immediately afterward.

The final three nominees will be announced February 2 along with the rest of the Oscar nominations.

How sweet would it be to see District 9 in the final three? We’re keeping our fingers crossed!

It’s pretty obvious Avatar is going to be nominated and win. I mean you’d be a fool not to acknowledge the sheer accomplishment Cameron has achieved. Whether you liked the move or not there’s no denying it.

  • Relaxing Dragon

I’m really pulling for District 9 to at least get a nomination. After all, it did make the Prawns look just as good as the Na’vi (and more interesting, but that’s another matter) at a fraction of the budget. That deserves some official kudos.

I’m also hoping Transformers 2 gets jack squat (more than it deserves). Luckily it’s pretty well hated by everyone, and didn’t look too impressive visually anyway (compared to the other things on the list).

I envision the final three being Star Trek, Avatar, and District 9. Avatar’s going to win of course, but the other two getting on the final list is still good.

  • Floydian Trip

None of those movies come close to the gigantic advancement Cameron has made in effect once again especially with the help of WETA who has the third largest amount of processing power in the southern hemispere. Gollum and King Kong look dated compared to this stuff.

Avatar is going to destroy everything in the end. Yeah District 9 was great but compared to Avatar no fucking way.

    • Pestilence

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Avatar, Transformers and 2012 making the final three. As you’ve said, though, if Avatar is going to win any Oscars this one is the only definite cert.
