Seven Films in the Running for Visual Effects OscarWhile it’s likely a foregone conclusion that Avatar will be taking home the Oscar, the Motion Picture Academy has announced the seven films that will compete in order to become one of three nominess for the Visual Effects Academy Award. And a couple of them are big favorites around the Dread Central offices.

As reported by Variety, the seven finalists for a nomination are “Avatar,” “District 9,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” “Star Trek,” “Terminator Salvation,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” and “2012.”

The visual effects bakeoff will be held Thursday evening, January 21, at the Academy’s Goldwyn Theater. Each pic will present 15 minutes of highlights. Members of the branch attend and vote for the three nominees immediately afterward.

The final three nominees will be announced February 2 along with the rest of the Oscar nominations.

How sweet would it be to see District 9 in the final three? We’re keeping our fingers crossed!
