Corpse Party: Tortured Souls:

Many anime are based on a manga (Japanese comic books) or vice versa. This entry in our list is an oddity, as it is based on a video game. Corpse Party was a series of games for PCs and the PlayStation Portable/Vita. The anime, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls, allowed an even larger audience access to this gruesome tale. Heavenly Host Elementary School was torn down after the murders and disappearances of some of its students and staff. Unfortunately, Kisaragi Academy was built in the same location. A group of students are in the Academy late at night and inadvertently transported to an alternate dimension where Heavenly Host Elementary School still stands, haunted by the ghosts of the children murdered there. The Kisaragi students must try to find their way home while surviving all the demonic forces that plague the elementary school.

If you’re looking for gore, torture, and sheer insanity, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls will not disappoint. With only four episodes to its name, the series is also a fairly short view if you’re looking for that special something to play at your Halloween party.

Hellsing Ultimate:

Hellsing Ultimate is an adaptation of the original Hellsing anime that was created purely for home release. It follows a secret British organization called—you guessed it—Hellsing. The group fights supernatural threats in a valiant effort to keep the public safe. A highly powerful vampire named Alucard is the organization’s prized vampire slayer. He, along with his new vampire underling Seras Victoria, works with the organization to slaughter all kinds of ghoulish monsters. While the general public sleeps peacefully in their beds, a war against the supernatural wages eternal.

Hellsing is known mostly for its unforgettable main character, Alucard, and his memorable red hat, and Hellsing Ultimate is no different. While there’s plenty of violence, monsters, and blood in this series, expect a good dose of humor and killer action as well.

Tokyo Ghoul:

Rounding out our list of favorite anime is Tokyo Ghoul. Taking place in modern day Tokyo, this version is haunted by deadly creatures called ghouls. Yes, we know, the title’s really not that original, but give it a chance! These ghouls are flesh-eating monsters, but they look just like humans. The rest of Tokyo’s population live in fear that they will be hunted down at any time by a ghoul. The series follows Ken Kaneki, a college student who has an unfortunate encounter that makes him the first half-human, half-ghoul hybrid. He must learn quickly how to survive in both the human and ghoul societies, as there are constant battles going on between different ghoul factions.

If you’re looking for an anime with a serious and dramatic streak, Tokyo Ghoul will serve you well. Ken has to balance out the human and monster sides of himself, which is bound to prove difficult. There’s also plenty of terror, as the desolate world of the flesh-eating ghouls is nothing to take lightly.
