New Steam Horror Game Overdoses on Caffeine

Caffeine is… wait for it, you’re not gonna believe this… a first-person horror game on Steam. Wow! There aren’t any more of those.

Sarcasm aside, Caffeine’s strange setting does help to set it apart from the countless other first-person indie horror games on Steam. Set in a spaceship and not, as its name would suggest, in a cafe, the game depicts a future where mankind has become addicted to caffeine and…wait, that’s the same as in real life. Whatever, you play as a kid on the ship with no memory of how he got there as you try to uncover the secrets on board the huge vessel.

Synopsis:
Caffeine is a quirky first-person psychological horror adventure game with environmental puzzles. Set in the near future, the entire population of Earth is vigorously addicted to coffee. Massive space stations built by the biggest corporations roam the stars, mining minerals to create a synthetic caffeine.

Most horror games on Steam feature stories about people waking up in some dark abandoned place, with no recollection of how they got there, so in that respect Caffeine does in some ways seem to be on the same level as all the rest.

But having said that, the game’s been in development for well over a year, so it’s clearly had a lot of time and effort put into it, as opposed to many other Steam games which seem to be developed over the course of about five minutes from cobbled together Unity assets (I’m looking at you, The Slaughtering Grounds). The caffeine’s really gone to the developer’s brains (sorry).

Caffeine will be released in episodic installments, with the first dropping in October.
