All Of The Iconic Horror Hits Streaming For Free On Kanopy

Kanopy Oldboy

If you watched Arthur, you know that having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got your library card. Local libraries offer a host of services to the public other than books. They provide community events like public speakers, book club meetings, and art exhibits. Libraries are often connected to resources in the district and state that provide literacy support and career assistance. They can also offer internet access via the on-site computers or through your device’s wifi. That’s why I want to highlight my favorite service offered in my district’s libraries: Kanopy.

With your library card, you can access multiple streaming services. In this economy, we’re all feeling the pressure on our wallets. Take some weight off your bank account and tap into apps like Kanopy. Also, many universities are connected to Kanopy, so it’s worth checking out if you’re a student or staff member. Here are some of the amazing horror movies you can watch on the app ad-free.

Suspiria (1977)

Suspiria is a feast for the eyes! This Italian horror flick has an incredible score, memorable kills, a vibrant color palette, and fashion to die for. Suzy Bannion has arrived at an elite dance school in Germany, only to realize that something far more sinister is happening behind the walls. Suspiria is a movie that every horror fan should experience.

Possession (1981)

Possession (1982) is another movie that needs to be experienced. The movie follows the story of a Spy who comes home to a crumbling relationship with his wife. At first, the movie seems more like an intense family drama about a woman who has found a new love outside of her marriage. We later see who she has given her heart to and it’s guaranteed to send your jaw to hell.

Lady Vengeance (2005)

I love movies about revenge, and Lady Vengeance delivers. A woman is wrongfully imprisoned and loses custody of her child. We follow the steps she takes to reclaim her life and get revenge on the person responsible for her sentence. The cinematography and use of color will keep viewers glued to the screen. It’s also refreshing to see a protagonist who is not perfect, but you can still root for her mission. This film is a part of Park Chan-Wook’s Vengeance trilogy, and all three movies are hits!

Oldboy (2003)

While we are on the topic of revenge, Oldboy has one of the wildest revenge reveals I’ve seen in a long time. It’s also part of Park Chan-Wook’s Vengeance trilogy. Unlike Lady Vengeance, we don’t know why vengeance is sought out at the film’s beginning. We spend the movie with Dae-Su trying to figure out who imprisoned him for fifteen years; and why he was suddenly released. Oldboy gives viewers mystery, revenge, action, incredible camerawork, and lavish colors. I highly recommend watching it at least once.

Audition (1999)

Takashi Miike knows how to creep out an audience! If you’ve seen Ichi The Killer or Imprint from Master of Horror, then you know how far Miike is willing to go. Audition gradually goes from creepy to terrifying as we follow a widower on a journey to find a new partner. Unfortunately, breaking up can be painful.

Titane (2021)

I recommend Titane every chance I get! Julia Ducournau masters taking movies in unexpected directions—just watch Raw (2016). Here, we follow a dancer who has a one-night stand with unlikely consequences. Titane is the most unpredictable movie I’ve seen in the last 20 years.  The violence will surprise you and the music will entice you. I especially love the needle-drop from The Kills near the film’s beginning. This is great for fans of the New French Extremity subgenre.

Knife + Heart (2019)

While I’m on the topic of New French Extremity, Knife + Heart is worth a watch! This French Giallo follows an adult filmmaker and her tumultuous romantic relationship with her editor. On her quest to win back her lover through filmmaking, the bodies of the crew members begin to hit the floor as a killer targets them. This movie is gay and beautiful to watch, which is why I revisit it often. The first kill keeps me up at night.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

If you’re looking for an 80’s slasher, Kanopy has got you covered! My Bloody Valentine (1981) is a unique slasher that stands the test of time. Many of the kills were cut for the theatrical release, however you can catch those kills on the streamed version. The story is set in a town that opted not to celebrate Valentine’s Day due to a past tragedy. Now they have decided it is time to put the tragic event behind them and celebrate love this year, unfortunately, someone in town is not over the past.

Bay of Blood (1971)

Another slasher worth checking out is Bay of Blood. This Italian slasher from the 70’s is perfect for a Friday night surrounded by friends. After a heiress is murdered, members of the family begin to kill for personal gain. While the story is mostly straightforward, the reveal of the killers at the film’s end was a great surprise. Bay of Blood also influenced some of the 80’s slashers. A kill in this movie may be later seen in the Friday The 13th Franchise.

Werewolves Within (2021)

If you are looking for fun with a side order of blood, check out Werewolves Within. The comedy beats worked well and the mystery was fun to unravel. Finn Wheeler, a forest ranger, has arrived at a small town to begin his new post. When a snowstorm traps the residents together, Finn must work with the town’s postal worker to identify the beast targeting the community.
