Director Mike Flanagan Praises Tragic Netflix Zombie Thriller: “As a parent, this movie seized me by the heart”

Cargo on Netflix

During the lockdown phase of the Covid pandemic, Mike Flanagan made the most of unexpected downtime by partnering with Rotten Tomatoes to speak to a handful of films that really resonate with him. I’ve shared several of his recommendations here previously and today, I’m back with another suggestion from the prolific creator.

This latest recommendation, Cargo, is a poignant zombie picture from filmmakers Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling (who would eventually collaborate with Flanagan on The Haunting of Bly Manor). Keep reading below for Flanagan’s detailed thoughts on the film. And if you’re curious to check the flick out for yourself, head over to Netflix.

The setup is as follows: Stranded in rural Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic, an infected father desperately searches for a new home for his infant child and a means to protect her from his own changing nature.

“Man does this movie hit me in the heart,” says Flanagan. “Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling have crafted a zombie movie unlike any other I’ve ever seen, with a dynamite hook and an emotional through-line that affected me way more than I was expecting. As a parent, this movie seized me by the heart. The final moments are as beautiful and poignant as I’ve seen, in and out of the genre. I was so impressed, in fact, that I had to get these filmmakers involved with The Haunting of Bly Manor (they direct two episodes).”
