WasteworldStarring Nicole Magdalena, Tommie Grabiec, Jeremy Hill

Directed by Andrea Niada

A woman, a bunch of trash bags, and supposedly the key to all that the world contains in its infinite surrealism… yeah, you’d better sit down and have a very tall drink before watching Andrea Niada’s short film Wasteworld.

This odder-than-odd 12-minute presentation requests that you put your headphones on before watching, and at the risk of your eardrums suffering any trauma, might I suggest that the volume be set at a low level. This particular display is the culmination of a few other pieces directed by Niada; yet, this one definitely comes off as the biggest head-scratcher of them all.

The focus is on a lonely woman (Magdalena) who is knee-deep in trash bags, desperately searching for a key to unlock a mysterious container. She is joined in what seems like a futile search by a man who appears to be scouring the garbage pile for the very same thing – clear bags might have alleviated some of the search time, but that’s just me saying.

The complex container emits an unsettling buzz from its insides, and if your headphones are set at an elevated tier, you’ll certainly be the first to be aware of its aural tenacity.

It’s a simple film, not terribly frightening, but beautifully visual in nature with its reliance on heavy darks and bright overhead lighting. If you’re hurtin’ for something to kill a dozen minutes, then feel free to give this one a watch, but I can honestly say that I’ll be pitching it into the circular files after just one view.
