Gone Girl Writer Selling Film Rights to Ghost Story The Grownup

Gillian Flynn has become highly sought-after in the wake of her novel Gone Girl being adapted into the same-named feature film, and this year’s Dark Places also began its life as one of her books. Hoping to make another big sale, Flynn has another story on the market, and we’ve got details.
Per The Tracking Board, the film/television rights to Flynn’s short story “The Grownup” are up for grabs, and it’s being described as a ghost story similar to Henry James’ “Turn of the Screw.”
The short tells the story of a woman struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of [mostly] harmless fraud. While “reading auras,” our heroine meets a woman who claims to be terrorized by poltergeists. She visits the home where the occurrences take place to find that she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore as she finds herself locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it.
This short story originally appeared as “What Do You Do?” in George R.R. Martin’s Rogues anthology but will be published individually by Random House LLC on November 3rd.
