Religious cults are scary. Like, really scary. And their ideology is so obviously insane that it always seems amazing that honest, good people are willing to join them. Hell, the fact that the most of the current Republican Presidential nominees think that the separation of church and state should be ignored because the Bible comes first and still get thousands upon thousands of supporters shows just what kind of world we’re living in.

The new game The Church in the Darkness will attempt to shed some light on just what goes on in these crazy cults in the first place, whilst also offering a different narrative experience with each separate playthrough. It comes from Richard Rouse III, the designer of Midway’s legendary horror game The Suffering, and will be released early next year.

Synopsis:
From Richard Rouse III (The Suffering) and inspired by real-life events, The Church in the Darkness is an action-infiltration game that delves into the radical movements of the 1970s. As a former law enforcement officer, you have resolved to get into Freedom Town and check on your sister’s son. But life in Freedom Town may not be what it seems.

Every playthrough of The Church in the Darkness offers a unique version of Freedom Town with different character personalities and a shifting narrative told through investigation, observation, and action. How dangerous are the Walkers? Who are your allies and enemies? How far will you go to uncover the truth and save these people?

Of special note, the roles of the cult leaders were written specifically for Ellen McLain and John Patrick Lowrie, married in real life and well known for voicing GLaDOS (Portal) and the Sniper (Team Fortress 2), respectively. The couple is also helping to compose the soundtrack―Ellen’s musical contributions to the Portal series obviously need no introduction.

The Church in the Darkness is coming to PC/Mac, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in early 2017. For more information, follow developments via Facebook and at paranoidproductions.com/church.
