‘The Black Phone’ Trailer — The Kids Are Not Alright And Ethan Hawke Is To Blame

After dabbling in the Marvel universe with Dr. Strange, director Scott Derrickson is back in the world of horror with his new film The Black Phone. And based on the film’s new trailer, he’s going back to the haunting roots of analog terror seen in Sinister.
In The Black Phone, Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

Finney is Mason Thames’ first film role, and what a way to burst into the acting scene. He acts across from four-time Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke, who is always stunning. But here, he’s not playing the typical heroic horror dad as seen in films like Sinister and The Purge. Instead, Hawke is playing an almost child-like serial killer with a penchant for masks and diabolical giggling. Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone also star in the film.
In his review out of Fantastic Fest, Dread Central’s Drew Tinnin said:
Landing somewhere in between a sadomasochist and a court jester, Hawke’s performance is fearless. But it’s Mason Thames’ nuanced turn as Finney that keeps The Black Phone grounded when the more supernatural elements come calling. Thames’ tenacity is infectious and makes Finney easy to root for, even when it seems a little too simple at times for him to just run away.
Derrickson produced, directed, and co-wrote The Black Phone. Frequent Derrickson collaborator C. Robert Cargill also penned the script, which is based on a short story by Joe Hill from his book 20th Century Ghosts. Jason Blum also serves as a producer, with Ryan Turek and Christopher H. Warner executive producing.
The Black Phone hits theaters on June 24.
