Wenders & DaFoe In the Miso

Famed German auteur Wim Wenders is back at Cannes this year with a thriller called Palermo Shooting, about a photographer who flees his home in Germany and settles into a new life in Italy, which is getting all sorts of early buzz.

THR sat down with Wenders to discuss his career so far, and towards the end of their chat the director revealed that his next project will be a horror film called Miso Soup. ”It is going to be very exciting. Horror is one genre that is used much less than others to transport other things,” Wenders told the trade. ”Lots of people have used great thrillers to transport political messages, but the horror film is rarely used to transport anything but fear.”

I don’t know if that’s necessarily true at all, but whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess. Though Wenders didn’t reveal anything about the plot, he did say it was based on a famous Japanese novel, which could be Ryu Murakami’s In the Miso Soup, about a tour guide in Tokyo who has to deal with an insane man with superhuman strength who may or may not be dismembering local homeless men and schoolgirls.

I hope that’s what it’s based on; I want to see that as a film! The only other piece Wenders revealed was that Willem DaFoe is attached to star, and shooting will go down in Tokyo next spring. We’ll hand you more details when we find ‘em!
