*Updated* The Devils and Oliver Reed Wont Return
UPDATE: Ever hear the saying "So close, yet so far?" Unfortunately that applies here. As confirmed by Warner Home Video, The Devils will NOT be seeing a DVD release in 2008. Though the door has been left open for a release sometime down the road. Feh.
If there's one actor I miss as much as Vincent Price, it would have to be Oliver Reed. The man could drink and act and drink ... and be damn entertaining. So, you could guess that today's news really brought a smile to my bloodied face.
DVD Active released the news today that Oliver's horror/exploitation title The Devils (1971) is finally being released on DVD via Warner Bros. on May 20th! The picture, which was originally rated "X" when first released, was directed by Ken Russell and co-starred Vanessa Redgrave.
If you've never had the pleasure of seeing this odd feature, check out the video below for a peek at what's coming your way.
In order to take over pre-Renaissance France, Cardinal Richelieu and his power-hungry followers will have to eliminate Father Grandier. Grandier controls the one town that keeps Richelieu from having total control of the region. The plan is to convince the townspeople that Grandier is a warlock and that all of his nuns are possessed by devils. The accusations are heard at a public trial - whose results may surprise you.

NEXT STORY
Sometimes I’m loathe to bring attention to screenshots of a game that is still a good ways off when they look as bad as this, but when the game is Silent Hill V and the graphics just aren’t remotely up to scratch, it’s a different story.

Yeah the whole thing, just like the movie itself, is really weird.

So, artwork and details were released for a DVD that isn't going to hit in 2008? That sounds a bit fishy.

[quote]The source of yesterday's rumor about a DVD of Ken Russell's The Devils coming out in May was Warner Home Video's own online/business website, which is called WHV Direct. The information, however, was a "mistake," according to WHV exec publicity director Ronnee Sass. She explained that right now "there are absolutely no plans to put out The Devils in '08," although the title may make an appearance down the road.

I remember parts of the film being intentionally funny, but the last time I saw it was in the late '80s.

I saw this on the big screen of a film class. I couldn't drive for about an hour after. I just sat in my truck, stunned...not in a good way. Really messed me up.
Love it or hate it, you don't forget seeing it that's for sure.

Holy $h!tChrist, finally. This is a fantastic film and Oliver is tense the whole time and Redgrave have never been better. This film is like a demented fever dream of religious debauchery. I saw this in my early teens and it certainly made an impression. I've seen copies online for many $$ but held off due to questionable quality, hoping this would come to be. Not sure why Syxx call's this a Horror/comedy, I don't recall any of this to be comedy.

The Devils is Ken Russell at his finest. I've been waiting decades for this...

One of, if not THE, high point in Oliver Reed's career, and an absolute masterpiece from a brilliant filmmaker. This has been a looong time overdue for proper restoration. Even the X rated version that was released was heavily cut.
I hope the Rape Of Christ scene has been properly restored, as well.
A mad film, and based on true events. One that absolutely should be seen by anyone with an adventurous mind. I could go on and on about this movie. It's that good.
