Hellboy has existed as an indie comics staple for years now, converting even the most jaded “men in tights” comic collector. Mike Mignola’s gritty style celebrates times of noir shadowed by splash pages seemingly torn right from the Necronomicon itself. Suffice to say, the man is a unique talent.
So, that being said, why would a company seeking to create the first Hellboy animated movies want to tamper with perfection? Who’s to say … but most fans agree the result is fun, edgy and not the anime cloned art we’ve come to expect. Think equal parts Bruce Tim (of Batman: The Animated Series) and the designers of Avatar (most likely the greatest original cartoon we’ve seen in the last 10 years.)
Enough gushing. With two films under their belt, the filmmakers have granted Gentle Giant the rights to produce toys from the DVD series. Things kicked off with a bust-up line, which was cool enough, but action figure fans cried out for more. GG answered with a special edition action figure, released with the second animated film. Below you’ll find plenty-o-drool fodder in pics of big red himself. GG promises a general release in the not so distant future and if all goes well, more characters! Here’s where you scream and yell for what you want to see. You better believe Gentle Giant is listening.
NOTE: Since writing this, Gentle Giant has sent over five new figures from a new Hellboy Animated line!! The series includes two Hellboys (one with a different head), Abe Sapien, and two movie Hellboys, one of which sports the long horns. They will also offer a trench coat for your Animated Hellboy. Look for an update with images on this line very soon!
