Looking Deeper at The Road

I still have yet to discover the phenomenon of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road first-hand, though I do have every intention of reading it before the movie is out later this year. If you’re curious, you can get The Road through Evilshop here.
A new article in the New York Times finds author Charles McGrath taking a closer look at what makes McCormac’s book so important and why the film will be different from other post-apocalyptic movies. “What we wanted is a kind of heightened realism, as opposed to the ‘Mad Max’ thing, which is all about high concept and spectacle,” director Johnn Hillcoat told McGrath. “We’re trying to avoid the clichés of apocalypse and make this more like a natural disaster.” So there won’t be any leather freaks among the gang of cannibalistic madmen chasing the father (Viggo Mortensen) and son (Kodi Smith-McPhee) at the center of the plot.
It’s a really good article, probably even better if you’ve read the book since there’s a lot of hope that the film will stay true to it, so be sure to hit the link above to check it out. The Road is due out in November from Dimension Films.
