Long Time for Legend

Richard Matheson's I Am LegendI guess it’s only fitting, considering how long it took the latest adaptation of Richard Matheson’s classic novel to get to the big screen, that it should take its dear sweet time getting done.

Set to begin production on September 23rd, Francis (Constantine) Lawrence’s version of I Am Legend will shoot for just over half a year, with a final wrap to be called on March 31st, 2007, according to Production Weekly. For reasons I still can’t fathom, Will Smith stars in the new version, which has already set a theatrical release date of November 21st, 2007. I hope they’re doing a lot of editing while they shoot, because that sure isn’t a lot of time for post between wrap and release.

For those of you who have been living in a cave for the last decade or so, Matheson’s story follows the lone normal man after an apocalypse that causes humans to become bloodthirsty ghouls. Previously the story was adapted for Vincent Price in Last Man on Earth and Chuck Heston in The Omega Man. Word has it that Lawrence’s version will be the most faithful adaptation of the source novel.
