Gears of WarRumors and speculation have been flying around for a while now about who should sit in the director’s chair for a big screen version of the XBOX 360’s best selling title. Now, we’ve got the official word!

Variety confirmed today that Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) will be the lucky guy who will bring the special effects heavy film that will no doubt feature lots of monsters, chainsaw guns and tons of blood.

Writing the video game adaptation is Chris Morgan, a name that appeared in credits for penning the upcoming action flick Wanted and Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. This may make a good combo for Gears; after all, Wiseman was the art director for the American Godzilla and ID4. The movies may not be favorites for some, but it may just work given the style we saw in Epic’s game.

Cliff Bleszinski (lead designer of the popular 360 title) is also on board as executive producer, so that should easy fears of a botch transition from small to big screen. Now, all we gotta do is wait. I’ve got a feeling this thing won’t be hitting us until late next year or sometime in 2010.
