Hansen Talks Russo's Escape of the Living Dead

Escape of the Living Dead coming soon...The last thing the zombie world needs right now is another half-assed attempt to cash in on George Romero’s brilliance, but it looks like that’s just what we’re staring down the barrel of as John Russo prepares to unleash Escape of the Living Dead on us.

Based on the Avatar Comic of the same name, Escape is set in the same universe as Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, picking up many years after the initial outbreak. The theory is that some of the zombies were captured for experiments and have now escaped, causing the dead to come back all over again.

Fangoria chatted with Escape star Gunnar Hansen recently, who might just be one of the only people out there looking forward to this. “This is a really brilliant role,” he told the mag. “My character is a biker; he gets zombified and then becomes the lead ghoul. It’s going to be great fun, and yeah, I’m not just making a cameo appearance in this. To me, there is nothing better than being a zombie, so I’m really looking forward to that.”

Perhaps you think I’m being too harsh from the outset, but keep in mind that Russo is the man responsible for the 30th Anniversary edition of Night, which featured all-new footage he shot to try and make the film “better”. That alone should have been enough to banish him to the Forbidden Zone for at least a few centuries; instead he’s walking among us, making movies.

Tony Todd, Kane Hodder and Kristina Klebe also star in Escape of the Living Dead. We’re not sure of the status yet, but it has a release date of September 1st, 2009, so expect to hear a lot more about it, whether we like it or not, in the coming year.

Escape of the Living Dead was a waste of comic. Having organized and conciencious zombie bikers was so dumb and ugly looking. How do these things move forward. I'm sorry if any of you are "Gunnar Hansen" fans, but aside from his work as Leatherface in 1974, his acting has been total crap. Did anyone see Mosquito or Swarm of the Snakehead? Ugh.
What ever happend to Clive Barkers UK take on Night of the Living Dead - London: Bloodline comic? That would have been a cool logical step to make into film, seeing the infection spread overseas and a good extension of NotLD concept.

It seems like a lot of movies come about in convention bars around the US and Canada with the carny celeb crowd getting together and casting each other in these things that probably sound good after 5 or 6 beers and some notes on a bar napkin.

You have no idea how true that is. All these con regulars are approached by indie filmmakers, the money is right, and beore you know it we have another Hodder/Todd/Hansen reunion.

A couple years ago I was at convention bar having a beer with John Russo and Russsell Streiner and watched this happen with some indie filmmaker guy I can't remember beyond that his wife was hot and we caught some smokes together. I don't know if a movie came out of it in the end.

He executive proudced it so, technically, yes he was. However, I read the reviews and avoided that one, as opposed to the 30th of Night, which I bought like a stupid monkey.

Wasn't John Russo also the man responsible for Children Of The Living Dead as well? Yeah, fuck this movie.

Wow. That 30th Anniversary edition of NOTLD really did suck ass, but it must have pissed you off in a special way, Johnny!

Well Unknown, some movies are a slap in the face. The 30th Ann. anally raped my mother while pouring sugar in my gas tank. Yup, it's bad.
