Exclusive: Schmidt Has Insomnia
Butane just called in from this weekend's Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in Secaucus, NJ with some interesting news concerning the latest Stephen King adaptation that's heading to the big screen, Insomnia (order here), with Wrong Turn director Rob Schmidt at the helm.
For those who may not remember, Insomnia is one of King's most massive books, clocking in at over seven hundred pages. When asked how he was going to handle bringing such a long story to theatres, Schmidt related that he'll be focusing a lot on the town itself.
If you're unfamiliar with Insomnia, here's a brief synopsis from StephenKing.com:
"Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he awakens a little earlier until he's barely sleeping at all. During his late night vigils and walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people's heads. He witnesses two strange little men wandering the city under cover of night. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought about by sleep deprivation. Ralph and his friend, widow Lois Chasse, become enmeshed in events of cosmic significance."
Ralph and Lois open the story as older folks who get younger. In order to achieve this, Schmidt revealed that young actors in their thirties will be playing the roles in age make-up that will be removed progressively to give that fountain of youth effect courtesy of none other than another Wrong Turn alumnus, the great Stan Winston!
"I'm doing the film mainly because King was such a big fan of Wrong Turn!" says director Schmidt.
Me? I'm hoping that Schmidt is able to bring along some coherency and horror to King's story. As it stands, Insomnia is my least favorite of King's work because it has that idea grab-bag feel to it. You know, put several unrelated ideas into a bag, shake it up, pick out three, and write a story that somehow links them all together.
Please, Rob, if you're reading this, nix the whole giant catfish in the sky angle before I scream.
