E3 2008: Project Origin & Fallout 3 Trailers
It’s E3 week, which means tons of gaming news. I’ll be back later today and tomorrow with any horror centric news from the big three’s press conferences. Microsoft is up first today with its press conference, and then tomorrow Nintendo and Sony unveil their future plans.
Games expected to be shown in greater detail include Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, Siren: Blood Curse, Silent Hill 5, Project Origin (the sequel to F.E.A.R.), Fatal Frame 4, Ghostbusters, Left 4 Dead and last but not least, Dead Space. Hopefully there’ll be a number of surprises along the way, but let’s get things rolling with some new trailers.
First up is Project Origin from Monolith Software and WB Games. Monolith stand as one of the most reliable developers of first person shooters out there with a steady output of great games. Other studios may put out better games, but no other team gives us great games as regularly as Monolith. For the last couple of years they’ve been serving up slices of horror goodness, namely F.E.A.R., Condemned, and Condemned 2: Bloodshot.
The original F.E.A.R. (review) was an intense action game with best in class enemy AI. Incredible firefights in tight spaces, interspersed with all kinds of scary and horrific goings-on, were the order of the day, and unsurprisingly for a game so well received, Project Origin (coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3) looks to build on those strong foundations while carrying on the story.
The game puts you in the shoes of a new soldier. No longer the nameless point man, you’re now “Beckett” and he’s part of the team seemingly trying to put a stop to Armachem’s actions by taking out the president of Armachem.
Alma is again present here in both her child and adult form… the graphics look improved on just about every level, and the atmosphere seems to have greatly benefited from the ruined environments. There are also a few monsters here, something you didn’t really run into in the original F.E.A.R., and based on the designs on show that have a real Eighties feel to them, I’m pretty optimistic about the addition.
Up next is a teaser for Fallout 3 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Fallout 3 is a game that hasn’t really been covered here with it sort of slipping under my radar. The Fallout series, for anyone that hasn’t played it, is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the result of one of those wars that everyone lost.
Survivors live in shelters scattered across the world known as vaults, but very occasionally they will be forced to venture outside in order to gain important supplies. Outside waits another breed of survivor, creatures hideously mutated by a biological weapon used as a first method of attack before everything went nuclear, and the radiation hasn’t helped any.
Though set in the future, the Fallout series is well known for its sense of humor which is mostly based on the nuclear paranoia in the Fifties and the ‘Duck and Cover’ style educational materials.
The first two Fallout games were isometric turn based RPGs; Fallout 3 represents a big change for the series. This one is in full 3D in a large open world. You still have a team of sorts, though it is now limited to Dogmeat (your loyal dog) and one other person. The game can be played in first or third person, and combat is similar to Mass Effect in that it is real time, but you can pause the game and issue a series of commands which will be carried out once the game is un-paused.
Expect to see much more on Fallout 3 later in the week as the game is shown off at E3, but in the meantime, enjoy this short teaser trailer.
