Things are finally moving on the long-gestating Richard Kelly film, The Box, based on the Richard Matheson short story "Button, Button". How do I know this? The trades told me so!
Variety reports this morning that Cameron Diaz is set to star in The Box (insert obvious but admittedly funny crude joke here about Diaz and her box), playing a woman who is given a mysterious box by a stranger and told that certain things will happen depending on which button she presses. Sure that doesn’t sound horrifying, but wait till you see what those "certain things" are.
The budget is around $30 million, which seems like an awful lot for such a simplistic story, but I’m sure Kelly will use it to the fullest. Oddly, there’s no mention of Eli Roth anywhere in the announcement, even though he’s always been side-by-side with Kelly on the development of The Box. Hmmmmmm....
Stay tuned for more very soon!
