Dexter and Pan are Golden

Michael C. Hall as DexterThe Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nominations for the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards today, and while the number was rather sparse, I was pleased to see at least a few genre offerings intermingled with the expected more mainstream nominees.

First up, and this woman couldn't be happier if I tried, is Michael C. Hall of Showtime's Dexter for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama. After just the first episode of this critically acclaimed series, it was obvious that no one else on the planet could "do" Dexter quite like Hall. If you haven't watched the show, you're missing out on one of the best performances of the year on either the small or big screen.

Also nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category is Pan's Labyrinth. It faces some stiff competition from Apocalypto and Letters from Iwo Jima since both Gibson and Eastwood are perennial favorites, but based on early reviews (and Gibson's "antics" earlier this year), Del Toro's masterpiece could have a pretty good shot at winning.

Lastly, even though it's not technically horror, kudos to the team behind the TV series Heroes. I know a lot of our readers are big fans of the show, which garnered two nominations: Best Television Series - Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Masi Oka, who portrays Hiro, the character that, for my money, is Heroes' heart and soul.

The Golden Globe Awards will be telecast live on NBC at 8:00 PM on Monday, January 15, 2007. While I'm not thrilled with some of the other nominees -- where the heck are Ryan Gosling and A Scanner Darkly to name just a few -- I'll still be there with my popcorn and scorecard. Join me?
