Del Toro Sees Death in Gaiman’s Future

There is something to be said for a director who doesn’t know what he’s doing just diving in head first to make their first feature, because while there always going to be mistakes, brilliance can be had from not knowing what you can’t do. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have Guillemo del Toro behind you, either.
So it makes sense that del Toro wants to see Neil Gaiman and only Neil Gaiman make his directorial deubt on Death: The High Cost of Living, the long-awaited adaptation of the 3-issue comic of the same name Gaiman created as a spin off to his Sandman universe. “I think that if anyone knows that character, it’s him,” del Toro told Sci Fi Wire while on the Hellboy II set, “I mean, there is without a doubt no one more qualified to tell that story than Neil Gaiman in my mind.”
It’s not exactly news, since Gaiman’s been talking about helming the project for a while now, but it’s great to hear Guillermo so gung-ho for the idea. The author/artist was on the set of Hellboy II not too long ago (you can read about it on his official site) and according to del Toro they talked “a lot. We talked about him directing as soon as possible.”
For those unfamiliar with the project, Death tells of the titular deity who once every century spends a few days on Earth to get a better idea for what humanity is like, taking on the form of a goth chick this time. She meets a suicidal teen and teaches him the meaning of life during her few short days. How sweet.
No solid plans are in place for Death to be shot yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as there are!
