Can Takeshi Beat Guilala?

A new and rather unexpected wrinkle has been added to the mix of Calamari Wrestler director Minoru Kawasaki’s low-tech giant monster romp Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit.
I first reported on this “>back in February, and now it seems there will be a second monster in the movie that will step up at the end to save the world from the monstrous alien daikaiju Guilala. Tthat guardian monster will be played by none other than Takeshi “Beat” Kitano (Zatoichi, Battle Royale).
“In the summer of 2008, the G8 Summit is held at Lake Toya, a beautiful resort near the volcano in Hokkaido. At the same time, a Chinese rocket falls onto the island, causing a monster to be born from a spore attached to the rocket. The monster, Guilala, moves toward the summit conference site in pursuit of volcanic energy. The U.S. president proclaims, ‘I will never yield to any monsters! Nobody calls me a chicken.’ Other leaders reluctantly switch the sign board from ‘G8 Summit’ to ‘Guilala Task Force’. Now they have to terminate Guilala to show their countries’ power and prestige. The first mission is a missile attack by Japan, then Italy, Germany, and…. Deadly combat between human beings and the monster from outer space continues. However, when everyone starts to give up, a journalist finds a strange group worshipping the traditional idol at the lakeside.”
The website Ryuganji is reporting that Kitano will get decked out in his own rubbersuit to play the titanic “Takemajin”, a deity – not all the disimilar to the giant stone samurai of the Daimajin films – who has protected the Japanese people since time began and is once again brought to life by people’s pleas to save their nation from an onslaught by the monstrously goofy X from Outer Space. The drawing you see above is a concept design of what Kitano as Takemajin will reportedly look like.
Kawasaki and company are going to have to work fast because the film is already slated to open in Japan in July. That guarantees more news to be coming sooner rather than later. And thanks to Jason Gray and his blog, here’s our first real good look at the updated yet still very old school Guilala.
