Today is truly a great day for film fans everywhere; for once a film that touches on almost all genres, from horror to drama to fantasy, has gotten the recognition it deserves from those stuffy stuffs in the Academy.

This morning the nominees for the 79th annual Academy Awards were announced, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth (review) has made the list with a whopping six nominations! del Toro’s Spanish Civil War-set masterpiece is up for Best Foreign Film, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score and Best Makeup. That gives our man a very, very good chance of winning at least one if not more!

Can you imagine? First Peter Jackson now Guillermo del Toro will be Oscar winners? Don’t get me wrong, they both more than deserve it; it’s just pretty amazing to think about…

The only other film on the list that comes anywhere near our genre is Monster House, which is up for Best Animated Feature. Make sure you tune in for the awards on Sunday, February 25th to cheer on our Spanish fanboy compatriot!
