Horror History: Happy Birthday, Writer-Director Scott Spiegel!

On this day in horror history, Evil Dead II screenwriter and Intruder director Scott Spiegel was born in Birmingham, Michigan in 1957. He attended Wylie E. Groves High School with longtime friends, director Sam Raimi and actor Bruce Campbell.
Spiegel’s first career move was playing the role of Scotty in Within the Woods, the short film starring Campbell which acts as a precursor to Raimi’s The Evil Dead.
He then co-wrote the screenplay for Evil Dead II with Raimi.
Spiegel once worked at the grocery store across from his elementary school. This led to him writing and eventually directing the pitch-perfect slasher flick Intruder.
Along with Boaz Yakin, he also penned the screenplay for Clint Eastwood’s The Rookie with Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Tom Skerritt.

When Spiegel first moved to L.A., he shared a house with some names that would soon overtake Hollywood. His soon-to-be-famous roommates included Raimi, The Coen Brothers (No Country for Old Men), Holly Hunter (Copycat), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), and Kathy Bates (Misery).
Even better, he is responsible for the career of director Quentin Tarantino. Spiegel introduced Tarantino to eventual Reservoir Dogs producer Lawrence Bender.
He eventually joined forces with Yakin and director Eli Roth to formed the production company Raw Nerve which produced Roth’s Cabin Fever follow-up, Hostel. Spiegel would later take the helm of Hostel: Part III. Spiegel also directed the direct-to-video sequel From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money.
