Three words, dear reader ... soul crushing disappointment. While that may sound overly dramatic, somehow it completely fits when discussing Kaare Andrews' long awaited Cthulhu in the sky flick Altitude. Before we get to all that, though, let's bring you up-to-speed.
Suffice it to say that the plot line takes many different twists and turns so in the interest of staying spoiler free, we're just going to give you the gist of things. Four kids in what I'm guessing is their late teens/early twenties embark upon a weekend getaway they they decide to head to via tiny airplane flown by the group's resident pilot played by Lowndes. Of course things go wrong and an equipment malfunction sends them flying high into the clouds on a constant ascent, where they encounter a massive tentacled sky monster. The story ripped from the pages of an old EC comic is deliciously goofy and totally up any monster fan's alley.
The first two thirds of the movie will have you rockin' and rollin' as Andrews displays one hell of an eye for the camera and each of the kids gives 110% acting-wise. There are parts that you'll be wishing you could have seen on the big screen as thus far it proves to totally belong there. But then it happens. The third act. The reveal. The final twist down the Holy Cow, Is this Really Going to Hell in a Hand Basket Highway comes with a finale so punishingly stupid that any interest or fun you're having with Altitude dissipates into ... well ... thin air. Your eyes will be rolling like a ball down a hill, and the urge to pop the disc from your player and snap it in half will be really hard to resist.
It may sound like I'm being harsh, and I guess I am, but only because I was loving Altitude, I mean really loving it, until it all went south like a lead balloon. Who knows? I could be way off the mark. Maybe the twist will work for you. I really hope so because there's so very much to like here. Don't let this review discourage you from seeing the film. Make up your own mind.
In terms of picture quality and sound, yes, Altitude is a good watch on DVD, but in Blu-ray hi-def it's nothing short of stunning. If you have the tech, this is a no-brainer, so yeah, have at it.
The supplemental features are comprised of a great commentary with Andrews (which makes things seem all the more tragic), two quick featurettes, and a concept art gallery. Nothing bad, but nothing to write home about either.
Altitude is a lot like dating a super hot chick and, when it comes down to business, finding yourself holding a sausage that is not your own. For my money, despite all of its eye candy and cool monster effects, this flick will get you anything but high.

I just saw it. Yes, the twist doesn't work, also the ending is a missed opportunity (instead of choosing the proper dark horror route)... but, I was entertained and the ending was in no was as stupid as that of 'High Tension' or 'Zombie's Halloween 2'.
2.5 knives is fair. I might not argue with 3.
Considering the last film I watched was After Life this is a big step up.

I personally thought this was a great movie. Nice little monster movie with a whole take on fate, karma, and parallel universes.

I think this bad review has made more people want to watch this movie than a good review possibly could have haha.
Maybe since I'm EXPECTING a bad ending I won't hate it? Who knows.

this is gonna sound weird... but I saw this ending coming.

This could be my review of Paranormal Activity 2...except for the whole 'I was enjoying it until the stupid ass ending' part. :) Still want to see Altitude for the same reason as the other commenter: I want to see just how badly they hork it up. Call it morbid curiosity.

This actually makes me want to see it even more now. Reason: I have to see what the ending is now that it seems to be so disappointing. I have to see what they did to fuck up what sounded like a promising movie. The good news is from reading the review it seems like a good watch up to the point where I'll go "WTF,you kidding me?"
So, I'll see it,just to see it.

It's exactly as creepy describes it. I literally sat there, saying out loud "No...no...no...NO...NO NO NO NO!" as I realised where they were taking it. Up until then it was a rather capable little monster flick.

Biggest disappointment of the year for me (so far anyway). It's up there with Monsters and My Soul to Take as far as mostly solid little flicks for their first 2/3 that just totally lost me with their endings, but Altitude takes the cake for sure.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww F. I am saddened to read you feel that way about Monsters. I was hoping that would be solid.

I didn't quite hate the ending as much as you did (I still hated it), but I pretty much agree. It was pretty bad and made me lower my opinion of the movie substantially. The monster was still badass though.

Are we talking an ending as bad as the one in High Tension? That's the worst 'twist' I've ever seen in an otherwise competent flick.

Dude ... you have no idea.

Aaaw geez, it's not one of those Sphere deals is it? Where it's an imagination monster of someone afraid of flying and it manifests itself based on a comic book?
