As if the scare factor couldn’t be ramped up more with the thought of some of these online dating apps out there, director Matthew T. Price takes it one deadly step further with Other Halves, a movie that could very well make any lonely single yearn for the days of looking for love in a smoky bar somewhere.
Zeroing in on a crack team of IT developers and other computer whizzes, the film takes the (normally) harmless instance of meeting that special someone online and throttles it to searingly violent levels. The thing that will set this new app apart from the others is that it affixes itself to you digitally and imprints upon yourself to learn about ALL your online habits in the mindset of finding you the perfect partner. This, simply in itself, absolutely chills me to the bone, simply due to the fact that some of these keyboard pounders might not be terribly far off from creating such a monster. As the app begins to take shape, one of the team members is found naked, with her boyfriend dead, drenched in blood, and she has no recollection of how it happened… oh Tinder, where have you gone already?
While the application appears to grow a mind of itself, it manages to mold the fragile minds of those who dare to use it, and the “other halves” are the ones who seem to pay the ultimate price. Interesting to those who love to live inside the hardware of their home computer, but I think it will fall short for those who are just looking for a good scare. It’s the very unsettling nature of what’s happening, plus the idea that once again, technology is indeed taking over and proving to be more of a conscious entity, but viewers could be tripped up by the excessive techie jargon.
In any event, Price manages to put out an eerie (possible?) peek into the future and will most definitely keep casual love seekers from ever entering so much damn information about themselves online. A one-time watch for sure.
