Disney Wary of Releasing THE NEW MUTANTS Following DARK PHOENIX Flop?

As we near the Fall of 2019, it’s hard to believe that, at one point, the X-Men spinoff The New Mutants was one of the most hotly-anticipated genre flicks of 2017. Billed as a truly horrifying superhero movie, the film went back to the drawing board for numerous rewrites and reshoots but seemed to survive the Disney/20th Century Fox merger that went into effect last March.

And though The New Mutants is currently slated for a theatrical release on April 3rd, 2020, a new report in Variety suggests Disney is looking to scrap the film following the abysmal response to Dark Phoenix–which was a heavy financial drain for the studio powerhouse.

Disney is optimistic that handing Fox superhero properties such as Fantastic Four and X-Men to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will improve the quality of these movies, but bumps must be smoothed over in that transition. The studio is unimpressed with New Mutants, an X-Men spinoff with a haunted-house vibe, and believes it has limited box office potential.

Is that the sound of nails being hammered into a coffin?

Synopsis:
Magik, Wolfsbane and other teenage mutants try to come to grips with their superpowers while staying at a secret facility.

The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone and stars Blu Hunt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton.
