The Best Horror Movies Streaming Now on Paramount+

Paramount+ must have read me writing shit in April because they stepped up their genre game this May. I’m specifically looking at the addition of Hellraiser films 3-8. I have only seen the first three of the original franchise and have lived a life of shame because of it. I feel like I have to binge these while they’re streaming together. That way I can finally stop being left out of important conversations. I must do it for the culture while the app has my back. They are also getting movies like The Haunting, The Mechanic, and Ghost, but you already know I’m about that Hell Priest life this month. However, it feels weird to just list 6 movies from one franchise and call it a day. So, I did manage to find five other titles I think deserve some attention after we’re all done with our Pinhead marathons.
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead
Two brothers’ plan to rob their parent’s jewelry store goes horribly wrong. In the wake of the catastrophe, their father begins hunting down the assailants for revenge without knowing his offspring are the people he’s looking for. I’m here for the mess and the drama. I rewatched it last year, and even though it’s very much a product of 2007, it’s still one of the better crime dramas from its decade. This gripping thriller stars the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, and Marisa Tomei. It’s one of my favorite performances out of Hoffman’s legendary filmography and is my favorite genre appearance for Hawke. Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead reminds me that we used to have nice things.
Crawl
A woman tries to save her father, who is trapped inside a flooding house during a hurricane, but ends up battling alligators. I’m not an aquatic horror girl, but even I appreciated how tense this title was. I’m happy Paramount+ is allowing people to discover this wild movie without commercial interruptions this month. To be completely controversial for a minute, it’s the best alligator horror I have seen. It might be time to gather people for a virtual watch party to see if my friends find this as distressing as I do.
Double Jeopardy
A woman who has been framed for her husband’s murder decides to track him down and actually kill him. Because the law says that she can’t be tried twice for the same crime, and karma is that girl. He had it coming, and this is a good for her thriller. We used to be a society where thrillers let women be women. Where is this woman in The Avengers lineup? I love a little eye for an eye, especially when awful husbands fuck around and find out. This tale of vengeance stars Ashley Judd, Tommy Lee Jones, and Bruce Greenwood. I know I watched it at least ten times as a kid, and I think I might have to watch it ten more times this month.
In the Cut
A professor has an affair with a detective who is investigating a murder in her neighborhood. This description and the movie are so damn messy! To make this movie even more chaotic, it stars Meg Ryan and Mark Ruffalo. I know it can’t be as sexy as I thought it was as a child. However, it’s not going to stop me from investigating what’s going on In the Cut while it’s streaming on Paramount+. I’m also excited because I remember nothing, so I am just assuming the obvious betrayal is a moment. I plan to tell all your kids this is When Harry Met Sally and 13 Going On 30. Those children are welcome!
Virtuosity
A VR simulation pulling personality traits from multiple serial killers gets out into the real world. We all love a good Denzel Washington thriller. The only thing better is when there’s the added bonus of sci-fi in the mix. While this 1995 title is very 90s, and chaotic, it’s one of the few times Denzel blurred those action/thriller lines even further to party with the genre kids. We must stan. I have cleared a whole day in my calendar for this movie. I’m ready to see Mr. Washington hunt down a psychotic android because that’s cinema, baby!

I’m also wondering if it might be time to watch Serpico just because it’s one of the few Al Pacino movies that wasn’t always on somewhere in my childhood home. My older brother always had a copy of Scarface or Carlito’s Way. However, no one ever asked me if I wanted to see the actor do other crime thrillers. Is it any wonder I turned out the way I am? I also plan to revisit Joy Ride because I contain multitudes. Also, it was a moment and deserves a few more viewings.
